AN IMPORTANT ISSUE COMING UP IN THE NOVEMBER 2005 ELECTIONS

Proposition 73
On the ballot of this year's special election in California, is a constitutional amendment that would require doctors to give parents or guardians written notice 48 hours before performing an abortion on a minor.

Note that the adult would not have to consent to the procedure, but sponsors hope the notification requirement would reduce California's teen abortion rate by getting parents in on the decision. "The idea is to create a waiting or reflection period so, in principle, there is time for a parent to be invoved and do some counseling," said Albin Rhomberg, a spokesman for Parents' Right to Know, the group behind Prop 73.

POST-ABORTION STUDY

A new study published last week in the Medical Science Monitor shows women who undergo abortions suffer serious psychological problems more frequently than was previously thought. The study surveyed women who had undergone one or more induced abortions, but who hadn't experienced a miscarriage or stillbirth. A few stats among the study's major findings were:

* Some 53.9 percent felt bad after their abortion, while only 13.8 percent felt relief.

* Of those surveyed, 36.5 percent had suicidal thoughts, and 26.7 percent increased their use of alcohol or drugs.

* Over 42 percent reported being sexually or physically abused before the age of 18.

* About 50 percent felt that their abortion had been morally wrong.

* Some 29.7 percent had never been counseled on alternatives to abortion.

Dr. Vincent Rue, lead author of the study and co-director of the Institute for Pregnancy Loss, notes this is the first published study to provide a detailed breakdown of traumatic symptoms which the subjects themselves attribute to their abortions. Dr. Rue feels these results will help mental health workers to be better prepared to recognize and treat the psychological complications of abortion.
